Magic Tricks - Everybody's Favorites Types

It's hard to resist a magic trick. Most of us love a good magic trick, whether we admit it or not. It doesn't matter whether it's live or on television, a good magic trick can still capture your interest and puzzle your brain. You can see the same trick many times, right up close, and still be amazed and impressed when you can't figure out how it's done.

There are a number of different types or styles of magic trick, and most people have a favorite. Perhaps your preference is for a spectacular trick, or you might prefer one that's close-up and intimate so you can challenge your own senses and perceptions. Which is your favorite?

Parlor Magic

Some find parlor magic tricks a little old fashioned, but they are still very popular today. A magician would be booked for a party and perform for the guests. Generally the magician stands on one side of the room, with the audience seated opposite. Parlor magic tricks are usually big enough for all the audience to see, and is closest to the style of show you see in a small scale stage show. A magician, perhaps a table, a few accessories such as a hat or a box, and that's parlor magic. An example would be the linking rings magic trick.

Palace Magic

Palace magic is a step up from parlor magic. It's bigger, with smoke and mirrors, perhaps live animals, and is performed on a larger stage. This is often the type of magic show that is shown on television. The effects need to be larger, so they can be seen by a much larger audience. It's pointless performing magic tricks such as card or coin tricks, because the audience can't see things in that detail. Tricks such as the magician and his assistant changing places, sawing a woman in half and making items vanish or appear are popular in palace magic. There also tends to be a much stronger element of drama in palace magic, with costumes, lighting and scenery all combining to enhance the make believe.

Close Up Magic

Although many people like the thrill and drama of parlor and palace magic, there's no doubt that if you want to disbelieve your own eyes, it's sometimes the simplest things that amaze the most. That's why close up magic is still so popular. This type of trick is generally performed on a plain table, with nothing but the magician and some cards or coins. It can be performed by street magicians without the use of a table. The skill and sleight of hand developed by the magician makes it hard to believe what we see, and are all the more mind boggling because you think that being so close you'd be able to see how the magic trick is done.

No matter which type of magic tricks you prefer, it's a testament to the skill and artistry of magicians that we are still amazed and entertained by this fascinating entertainment, many times even after someone has spilled the beans about how the trick is performed.
